Exile, a.k.a. XZR, is an excellent Action RPG taking place during the time of the Christian Crusades where you control the mysterious protagonist Sadler in a battle of good vs. evil. The original games were fairly controversial, from the wiki “The Exile series centers on Sadler, a Syrian Assassin, who is the main character of each game. The original computer versions were notorious for featuring various references to religious historical figures, modern political leaders, iconography, drugs, and time-traveling assassins, although some of these aspects were considerably toned down or omitted in the later console games, with the English versions rewriting all the historical religious organizations into fictional groups.”
Even with the edits to the home console release, much of the content remains intact (minus time-travel) and are now thinly veiled with name changes (Christian Crusaders became Klispin Crusaders). The overall story is still much more mature in nature compared to many others at the time, with themes of war and religion. That aside, it’s a solid playing game with a mix of RPG elements like upgrades, items and overhead style towns alternating with side scrolling action-platform levels. Great graphics, intriguing story, and an absolutely awesome Redbook audio CD soundtrack that fuses organic/ethnic sounds with driving electronic beats make this a defining, unique title for the system. Fun facts: this version of the game is is actually a remake of XZR II, it was also pointed out to me years later that the legendary and influential electronic group Kraftwerk is even sampled in one of the music tracks.
