What can one say, it’s the beloved Shoot Em Up classic R-Type with a Redbook CD audio soundtrack. Why does this exist? For those who are not aware, in Japan R-Type was actually released in 2 separate HuCards early on in the system’s lifespan, probably before they started making them big enough to fit the entire game. This was obviously not the case in the US where the whole game was released on one HuCard. Some time in Japan after the original HuCard releases they decided to re-release this version in order to play the game straight through in it’s entirety. Since the move to CD format they took full advantage of it adding a brand new, fully voiced introduction story sequence and of course a Redbook CD audio arranged soundtrack. Some R-Type purists scoff at the new CD soundtrack, preferring the original chip-tune soundtrack (which is quite good). Personally, even as someone who grew up playing the original US release since day one, I find the new soundtrack very entertaining and quite refreshing indeed with it’s funky Electronic vibes. Makes it feel like a whole new game, even if the actual game itself is exactly the same aside from the cinematics.
