In the year 2048, a sinister plot unfolds as the Grand Master Meio threatens to conquer the universe. Armed with a powerful plasma sword, Hiryu must navigate treacherous levels, overcome robotic foes, and utilize his acrobatic abilities to emerge victorious.
The arcade classic finally comes to the PC Engine using the Arcade Card capabilities. After a much rumored SuperGrafx port that circulated via unconfirmed screenshots in magazines (arcade screenshots instead) this is what we actually got. You know what? It’s pretty darn good! I grew up playing the Sega Genesis (Megadrive) port but always wondered what was up with the PC Engine version and was very happy when it turned out to be (sorta) true. While it’s not on the SuperGrafx, this way we have newly created fully animated cut-scenes (with some CGI even!), a Redbook CD audio soundtrack, excellent color and sprites, and use of voice samples – much of which is absent from other versions and much of which would be impossible if it was limited to a HuCard. Also, kind of a relief one doesn’t need a SuperGrafx which famously flopped. There’s even a whole extra bonus level exclusive to this version! You do get some occasional missed parallax and background art but you get all the other additional features and the core game-play remains intact. It’s Strider, for the PC Engine CD with Arcade Card, not perfect but still cool and certainly worth a shot. Strider as a game is an all time classic regardless…seemingly ported to Everything (look it up, some truly mad ones out there) this is one of the better and unique versions with that signature PC Engine CD flavor.
