Duran, a descendant of the legendary knight Drak, must prevent the evil Garuda Empire from resurrecting the god Deoric. To do this, Duran must travel across the six continents of Mistral, defeating the Dark Generals who guard each continent.
The game allows players to choose the order in which they explore the continents. Each continent is filled with enemies and a powerful boss. Players can equip one of four elemental armors, each with unique abilities and upgradeable power levels. By collecting crystals, players can purchase additional health, bombs, and continues in a shop between levels.
Needs no introduction really. An essential Shoot Em Up for the PC Engine CD / TurboGrafx-CD. Spiritual successor to Gate of Thunder that now takes place in a fantasy setting rather than the typical outer-space setup. Legendary Heavy Metal soundtrack, incredibly colorful graphics, responsive game-play, tons of enemy sprites on-screen, impressive power ups, massive bosses, mind-bending amounts of parallax scrolling, and lengthy anime style intro to boot, it’s a masterpiece of gaming no doubt. Lords/Winds of Thunder oozes creativity and breaks the boundaries of 8-bit, 16-bit, even on 32-bit hardware this would be impressive. This is also easily the better version compared to the Sega CD port due to the much richer color pallet, monster sound effects, and less of a pause in action when damaged. A system seller for sure and easy to see why it was even promoted with a VHS demo tape sent to owners homes!
This version retains the original JP voice-over for the introduction story sequence and in-game shop voice acting. Also of note is the cover art by the legendary Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell, etc.) is uncensored and can be appreciated in it’s original form. Even the game disc itself is way cooler in my opinion w/ it’s original magic circle aesthetic.

The US version is also available, please note that it removed the original JP voice-over for the introduction story sequence and in-game shop voice acting, probably due to budget constraints. Also be aware the cover art by the legendary Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell, etc.) is censored with the logo covering up the fairies present in the original image. Even the game disc artwork was changed from it’s original magic circle design… possibly a relic from the “Dungeons & Dragons fear” of the era? or maybe just typical US rebranding.
