Grand Vizier Jaffar of the Sultan of Persia plans a coup d’état while the Sultan is engaged in combat abroad. The Sultan’s beautiful daughter holds the key to his accession to the throne. If she doesn’t agree to marry him, Jaffar kidnaps her and threatens to kill her. The Princess’s beloved is cast into the dungeon in the meantime. He gets one hour to break out of his prison, outwit the guards en route, and stop Jaffar before the awful marriage occurs.

This 2D platformer is frequently cited as the originator of the cinematic platformer genre. It emphasizes cautious progression through fairly complex levels, stressing the protagonist’s vulnerability and survival aspect, as opposed to the more popular jump-and-run mechanics. To add more realism to the character animation, the rotoscoping technique is employed to great effect.

The main character has to dodge lethal traps, work out a few easy jumping and environmental puzzles (like stepping on pressure plates to raise the portcullis), and battle the guards with a sword. Although the player character has an endless supply of lives, each time he dies, he must start over at the beginning of the level and finish the game in an hour. The hero’s initial health is three units, which can be permanently increased with large jars or restored with small health potions.
