In the not too distant future, the bus carrying the entourage of a popular culture star, or “idol,” travels through the rural areas. When a female crew member unexpectedly passes out, her friends take her to a nearby abandoned mansion. However, the accident quickly starts to happen again, and there is evidence of a horrific murder as well as a possible ghostly presence in the mansion. Before it’s too late, Mei Star, one of the team’s investigators, and her computerized holographic helper Navi have to unravel the mystery.

Most of the time, in the adventure game Private Eye Dol, the action is seen from above. Mei is controlled by the player as she moves through the playable world, exploring locations and objects of interest and interacting with other characters. The game doesn’t have any puzzles, with a few notable exceptions, and the plot advances through the activation of events. Items need to be picked up on multiple occasions, but they are used automatically in the appropriate locations.
