Now with the English translation available, the original Japanese version often gets overlooked. I still think everyone should play the original first for that authentic unique experience of playing a Japanese import. There’s a few minor differences that impact your initial impression of the game versus the English patch. The opening cinematic in the Japanese release the German being spoken is more along the lines of the head of the people gathered are reciting what they’re doing and why themselves instead of an outside narrator like in the PSP audio and translation used. Also, the title screen in the English patch loses all impact by the changing of the name and logo to Castlevania thus removing the the epic slashing animation with sound of the X in Dracula X from the original Japanese release. I really wish they didn’t do that as it always brought a grin to my face and gets you hyped to play. If you never played the original give it a shot.
Arguably one of the best Castlevania games ever made, right up there with the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on PS1. Some people don’t realize this is actually Part 1 of the 2 games, as evident in the follow-up starting with the events at the end of this game. Amazing graphics, haunting soundtrack, branching paths & rock-solid game-play make this a well-deserved highly sought after title many years after it’s release. Somehow this game was not brought to the west when it first came out. While it’s now available on other devices, playing on original hardware will always remain a preferred way to play and a powerhouse showcase of just how capable the PC Engine really was. Heck, SOTN reuses many sprites from this game. Truly, this game bridges the gap from 8-bit, 16-bit, to 32-bit.
