Plot Overview
The story picks up in 1920s Japan, after the Hanagumi Squad and their leader, Ichiro Ogami, have defeated the ultimate evil and believe the country is safe. However, their main adversary is mysteriously resurrected. Though the heroes manage to defeat him again, they realize a greater threat looms: a masked demon is responsible for the resurrection. The Hanagumi must now find the true power behind the scenes and confront a tragic past that is being brought back to life.

Gameplay
As a direct continuation, the second installment maintains a similar graphical style and gameplay to the first Sakura Taisen. The game is divided into two main modes:

Adventure Mode:

  • Players control Ichiro Ogami as he navigates the theater (the disguised military base).
  • The goal is to initiate conversations with the girls of the Hanagumi.
  • Timed responses are a key feature; the player’s choices directly affect Ichiro’s relationship with each girl, which in turn slightly influences their combat parameters.
  • The game introduces several refinements to this timed answer system.

Battle Mode:

  • Combat is turn-based and occurs on large, pre-set isometric fields.
  • The player navigates Ichiro and the girls, who pilot their mechs, to fight enemy forces.
  • This game introduces two new characters to the Hanagumi roster.

Essentially, Sakura Taisen 2 continues the blend of relationship-building adventure and tactical mech combat that defined the original game, while escalating the threat and adding new characters.
