Set in Japan’s Taishou Era, the story takes place as Western technology, notably steam power, is modernizing the nation’s transportation and weaponry. However, the world is threatened by a dark cult intent on its destruction.
To combat this danger, the Imperial government establishes the Teikoku Kagekidan (Imperial Floral Assault Group), which features a fighting division known as the Hanagumi (Flower Brigade). This group consists of six young women from around the world who pilot spiritual, steam-powered armor called Kobou.
The main protagonist is Navy ensign Ichiro Ogami, who is unexpectedly chosen to be the new leader of the Hanagumi. His immediate challenge is to earn the trust of the young women he is meant to command.
The gameplay of Sakura Taisen blends Japanese-style adventure and dating simulation with tactical turn-based combat.
- Adventure/Dating Sim: Players spend much of the game exploring the theater that serves as the group’s hidden military base. The player’s decisions—where to go, who to talk to, and responses to questions (often under a time limit)—directly influence the protagonist’s relationships with the Hanagumi members. These relationships affect future dialogue, the ending, and even the characters’ parameters in battle.
- Tactical Combat: Battles take place on an isometric battlefield. Players control Ichiro and the girls, who can take two actions per turn (movement and attack). Characters have limited, unique walking distances and attack ranges, and can perform physical or powerful special attacks. Notably, the game does not feature experience points or equipment.
