The world has been ravaged by a post-atomic war, leading to a new conflict for control, with a single, tyrannical military organization ultimately seizing power and oppressing humanity using advanced technology. The game, Avenger, is a vertical-scrolling shooter where you play as a lone pilot fighting this regime, navigating a plane through levels filled with diverse enemy forces and massive bosses. Before each mission, you customize your loadout by choosing a combination of main, sub, and limited special weapons, and you can further enhance your chosen weapons’ firepower by collecting rapidly-changing in-game power-ups at the precise moment they cycle to your desired weapon category.
There’s something special about helicopter based shooters, this is an under the radar Shoot Em Up earlier release that still holds up. In fact, I hear it’s getting a re-release on modern consoles along with Psychic Storm and more. If you like games like Under Defeat for the Dreamcast you might dig this one. Cool vertical shooter with a style and vibe different than the oft-seen outer-space faring variety.
