Batsugun was the final game from the developer Toaplan and is considered a very early, if not the first, “bullet hell” shoot-’em-up (shmup). A significant portion of the development team later founded CAVE, which would go on to refine the genre.
The Sega Saturn version is notable because it combines both the original 1993 arcade release and the unreleased “Special Version” (which Toaplan couldn’t release due to bankruptcy).
Gameplay-wise, it’s a military-themed vertical shooter where players select one of three starting weapons. Instead of picking up power-ups, the weapons level-up by gaining experience points from destroying enemies.
