Blast Wind is a 2D vertical scrolling shoot-’em-up set in a post-apocalyptic universe. Players control artificial life forms named Kyo (Player 1) or Faun (Player 2) as they battle the robotic force known as Gorn, which seeks to wipe out the final remnants of humanity.
It follows the typical shmup format: players pilot a ship, collect power-ups to increase firepower, and shoot down enemies and bosses. Its unique feature is that the game is non-linear, allowing the player to choose alternate routes within the levels by activating special switches.
