In Emerald Dragon, the story follows Atrushan, a blue dragon who ventures into the Human World to reunite with Tamryn, a girl raised by dragons who returned to her people at age fifteen. Because of a mysterious curse that prevents dragons from appearing in their true form, Atrushan must transform into a human to make the journey. His quest is driven by his bond with Tamryn and the need to find a way to lift the curse from his kind.
The gameplay blends traditional Japanese RPG elements with unique tactical features. While it includes familiar tropes like dungeon crawling and automatic leveling, it stands out for its seamless world design that lacks a separate world map. In combat, players have the freedom to move characters across the battlefield based on their agility, though only Atrushan can be directly controlled while other party members follow general AI strategies. The PC Engine CD version of the game further enhances this experience with expanded dialogue and voice acting.
