Set against the backdrop of Japan’s Edo period, Iga Ninden Gaō follows a fierce conflict between the rival Iga and Kōga ninja clans that takes a supernatural turn when a mysterious foreigner, Doppelgen Hauser, kidnaps Princess Mayura with the Kōga’s assistance. Players take on the role of the Iga ninja Hattori Gaō, who must battle through Kōga interference and anachronistic obstacles to rescue the princess. As a side-scrolling action game, the gameplay centers on Gaō’s sword skills and aerial maneuvers, supplemented by a charged projectile system for throwing knives and limited-use, “all-screen” special attacks. Throughout the stages, defeated enemies drop power-ups and health items, while successful boss encounters reward the hero with essential weapon and armor upgrades to aid his mission. An often overlooked solid action title with strong supernatural elements, great graphics, music, presentation and challenging gameplay with onslaughts of enemies to defeat.
