Based on the Tenchi o Kurau manga, Dynasty Wars is an arcade-port beat-em-up set during China’s Three Kingdoms Era. Players choose from four historical warriors—Zhang Fei, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, or Zhao Yun—each featuring unique stats and weapons while battling infantry from horseback. The gameplay utilizes a lateral scroll and a distinct “charge” attack system, where holding the fire button builds momentum for more powerful strikes. While players can unleash devastating “tactics” at the cost of their own health, the game also incorporates light RPG elements; players can collect blue orbs to upgrade weapons and yellow orbs to gain experience, increasing their vitality between boss-filled stages.
This one flew under my radar until recently and I gotta say – it’s a blast! Another worthy addition to the sparse PCE/TG-CD Beat Em Up library. A commendable port of the arcade classic all things considered. With the unique twist of battling while riding horseback, it’s quite unlike anything else. Many more enemies come at you compared to some other titles of this genre on the console and it’s quite satisfying laying waste to anyone who stands in your way on the battlefield in this historic setting.
