Kaze Kiri: Ninja Action

Kaze Kiri PC Engine CD Reproduction

Probably my favorite Ninja game for the console, aside from Ninja Spirit (HuCard). At times both underrated and overrated, I personally think it’s one of the best games on the system. Fantastic graphics, atmospheric sound, cool bosses, more realistic game-play and a lengthy, well-done anime style intro. If you’ve heard it’s slow-paced, while regular walking is in fact pretty slow, they probably didn’t realize you can actually dash/run very quickly – this is not immediately apparent as you have to press diagonal up-forward to do it. You also have a variety of other moves, such as a back-flip dodge, slide kick, jumping dive kick, throws, and a vanishing ninja art. On top of the fact you either throw shurikens from a distance or sword slash up close – which you can chain several strikes. Also worth mentioning is your life meter constantly refills, something quite ahead of it’s time and now a completely normal feature in modern games! As the game progresses, you’ll quickly find yourself out-maneuvering enemies, slash-deflecting throwing stars, and fighting off multiple opponents like a complete bad-ass.
