Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force is a port of Mad Stalker: Full Metal Forth which originally released exclusively on the Sharp X68000. As for the original spelling, well it was actually the fourth title released by Fill-in-Cafe & Family Soft for the platform and well, Engrish? Anyway, all later ports and releases go by ‘Force’. With that out of the way, this is quite a hidden gem in my book! A side-scrolling, mecha themed Beat Em Up with large sprites, responsive game-play, anime cut-scenes and Redbook CD audio. You have several mechs/pilots to choose from, each with their own unique abilities – and special moves. See, while most Beat Em Ups play basically like Final Fight, this one plays more like if Street Fighter 2 had an endurance mode – as in Up is jump and special moves are pulled of by pressing a combination of direction movements and button presses – all while the enemies keep coming at you. The only downside to this version is the lack of parallax scrolling… similar to another Arcade Card release “Strider”. But really, unless you’ve played or seen footage of the original, you probably won’t miss it much while in the midst of battle. BTW, the enemy AI is no joke! Seriously, get ready to get your butt handed to you, although it’s never quite “controller throwing” difficult… well, once you get the hang of it. The game demands you learn how to play properly (don’t forget to block!) but once you do, you’re in for mecha beat down blast.
Update: As a fan of the title, I played the Sega Megadrive release too and while it’s cool to see, I still prefer this version.
