Spriggan Mark 2: Re-Terraform Project is the follow up to the excellent Seirei Senshi Spriggan but a wholly different type Shoot Em Up. Most noticeably the perspective has changed from being a vertical Shooter to now being horizontal. Additionally, the concept and setting are now very different. Where as before you battled through something akin to a Fantasy setting you now see yourself in a much more reality based yet futuristic Science Fiction world comprised of mechas, military intrigue and limited weapons resources. Speaking of intrigue, there is much more plot this time around with story beats being presented to you on an almost constant basis, not just in the anime-esque cut-scenes, with both comrades and enemies dialogue boxes w/ portraits and even voice acting happening during momentary pauses while you are in the levels throughout the game-play. Pretty cool and lends to a more epic movie-like feel, things are happening! whether you can understand what though is another story as of course it’s all in Japanese. Thankfully, you can just skip them or if you really want to know what all the hubbub is about, you can whip out your phone with the Google Translate app and set it to photo mode – hold it up to the screen and viola! you’ll at least get a rough idea of what the heck is going on. Anyhow, a solid Shoot Em Up with fantastic everything, graphics, parallax, CD audio, game-play, it’s got it all. Sort of like Mech Warrior in Space but a Shoot Em Up? Highly recommended.
Also of note: Spriggan Mark 2 is one of the very few side-scrolling shooters developed by Compile (as opposed to the top-down shooters they are much better known for).
