The Dawn of Ys is one of two similar but different games released as Ys IV, the other being Mask of the Sun. It continues the story of Adol Christin, shortly after the events of Ys II. Adol returns to the town of Minea, but a new evil emerges, prompting him to sail to the land of Celceta to investigate.
The gameplay in The Dawn of Ys is similar to the first two Ys games, featuring top-down perspective and a focus on action-oriented combat. However, it introduces new elements such as eight-directional movement and more strategic combat tactics. Adol can equip various items to enhance his abilities and utilize magic to defeat enemies.
The final Ys game appearing on the console. It’s a definite high point of the series, great story, beautiful graphics, amazing soundtrack, anime style cut-scenes, cool levels and bosses. Everything you could want in an Ys game in it’s most refined and well made pixel art goodness. Since it was released later on in the system’s life cycle it was unfortunately not brought out in the West. Crazy frustrating at the time but understandable in retrospect as there is extensive voice-acting throughout. Thankfully, this game can finally be enjoyed by non Japanese speakers as fans took it upon themselves to not only translate the text but even overdub all the voice acting! At long last, Ys IV is available in English and fully playable to be enjoyed in all it’s glory. Hands down the best of the original “bump-attack” style.
