Spriggan Mark 2, the side-scrolling sequel to Spriggan, departs from developer Compile’s typical top-down shooter format. Set in outer space, the game puts players back in the cockpit of a mecha fighting to determine the fate of a distant colony in an intergalactic war. The narrative progresses with the help of fully voiced, AI-controlled mecha allies who join the battle and interact with the protagonist. While the original game’s color-coded weapon system has been replaced by a standard collectible power-up mechanics, players now have the ability to switch the direction their mecha is facing to counter threats from behind, offsetting the lack of automated defensive options.
