Set against the backdrop of a galaxy under the heel of the Deguna Empire, Blood Gear follows the journey of Aref, a young apprentice thrust into a war of vengeance. The Empire maintains its dominance through “Powered Gears”—colossal combat robots—but their assault on a research lab inadvertently creates their greatest threat. After his mentor is killed in the raid, Aref inherits a specialized Powered Gear control device and sets out to dismantle the Empire’s military might, aided by a small band of like-minded rebels.
In terms of gameplay, the title blends traditional role-playing elements with side-scrolling action, reminiscent of the Exile series. Players navigate towns from a top-down perspective to interact with NPCs and prepare for missions, but transition to a 2D side-scrolling view when entering hostile environments. Combat occurs in real-time, allowing players to utilize an extensive arsenal of melee weapons and firearms, such as laser guns and assault rifles, while managing their health through the use of repair kits found in the field or purchased in shops.
The game features a streamlined progression system where points serve as a dual-purpose currency for both experience and economy. Instead of traditional leveling, players spend these points in factories to customize their Powered Gear across three main categories: body, arms, and legs. Each part features three specific sub-categories to fine-tune attributes like speed and strength. Notably, this system is highly flexible, allowing players to reverse upgrades and reinvest points as needed. To facilitate this growth, the game encourages “power leveling” through a persistent respawn mechanic, where enemies reappear whenever a player re-enters an area or simply moves off-screen.
Please note: this is a Japanese language game. Although, being more action oriented than RPG makes things more playable. It’s basically an action game in most respects with some platforming and light RPG elements. For the dialogue, you can try using the Google translate app’s photo mode to decipher what’s on screen when you need.
