Set in a grim late-21st-century future, Down Load 2 follows the “cyber diver” Syd as he infiltrates a virtual reality network to thwart a terrorist plot to resurrect Adolf Hitler via a digital recreation of his brain. Transitioning from a flying bike to a ship-like aircraft, this side-scrolling shooter replaces the original’s pre-mission loadouts with a dynamic system that allows players to switch between four main weapons—vulcan cannons, lasers, homing missiles, and lightning guns—at any time. Throughout the abstract “VR” and real-world levels, players can collect power-ups to upgrade their arsenal, increase ship speed, and deploy secondary sub-weapons like shields and bombs, all while the narrative unfolds through voiced, anime-style cutscenes.
The follow-up to one of my favorite HuCard titles Download. Like the original, this a very Cyberpunk horizontal Shoot Em Up – right up my alley! While some changes were made design-wise to the characters and your ship/motorbike, you’re still getting more of that solid gameplay with intense action, loads of parallax, big bosses, anime cut-scenes, and of course a CD music soundtrack. Interestingly, I only learned recently that there is even an anime OVA adaption! Apparently there was a whole multi-media, cross marketing plan for the series initially although that didn’t quite pan out, perhaps due to the over abundance of similar Cyberpunk themed content during the time period. Even this series wears some of it’s inspiration on it’s sleeve, looking at such anime as Megazone 23 etc.. Regardless, this game and it’s predecessor are no doubt two of the best Shooters for the platform.
